Duel/triple channel ram?

i know ive asked alot of questions, but i'm anxious to learn, I'm going to use the intel i7-990x cpu, and the g1 assassin motherboard, when searching for compatible ram it aks duel or triple channel? is a certain type required by my processor? or is it like a level of performance, and triple is better? also i read some forums, and they seem to say certain channels go into certain slots, basically i need a walk through on how channels work, because with my ddr2 system, i'm just used to plug and go.
