How long does it take for a house to be foreclosed and what steps will follow?

I hear that after 5 months of non-payment of mortgage, the bank takes back the house. Will the house get locked up on the first day of the 6th month? What happens to the belongings of the "homeowner"? Will it get put outside the house kinda like an eviction?
